Our democracy is at a crossroads, and voting rights are under assault. More than half of states have enacted laws in recent years that make voting harder for millions of Americans, often targeting communities of color, lower-income voters, and people with disabilities.
Many of these state laws can facilitate an ongoing threat: that partisan election officials and legislators could sabotage legitimate election results. That’s why we need federal legislation to fortify free and fair elections and protect against partisan manipulation.
The good news is that federal legislation pending in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives would bolster voter registration, improve election security, expand in-person and mail-in voting, ban partisan gerrymandering, help get dark money out of politics, and protect elections against political interference.
Tell Congress: Pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect every American’s constitutional right to vote and ensure that elections are decided by the will of the people.
With multiple states enacting laws that strike at the heart of voter access and election integrity, and with political leaders continuing to push the myth of widespread voter fraud, Congress must fulfill its constitutional duty to protect American democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
